The game of names
Even though San Francisco International Airport is only 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, California’s “Metropolitan Oakland International” changed its name to “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” in May. Ever since, there has been animosity.
Although the Port of Oakland claims that the rebranding aims to remind visitors that Oakland is a gateway to the Bay Area, some users appear to have been more puzzled than assisted.
Based on information provided by San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, some travelers have arrived at the incorrect airport. The new Oakland airport moniker, according to San Francisco’s trademark lawsuit against its neighbor, was a part of a scheme to “intentionally and deliberately capitalize off of misunderstanding.”
San Francisco is also requesting Oakland to reimburse its legal costs and an injunction. The proposal has been rejected by the Port of Oakland. Chiu’s office was accused of “tactics founded in publicity and anti-competitive intimidation” by its lawyer, Mary Richardson.
Regardless of how the lawsuit turns out, take it as a helpful reminder to double-check the name and address of the airport well in advance of your trip, to avoid ending up in Bucharest when you intended to go to Budapest.
One thing that might go wrong for passengers is to confuse similarly sounding airport names.
Though visually appealing, a recent social media fad of creatively arranging personal items in the security check-in bins has sparked concerns about increased wait times in the departures area.
In the meanwhile, you can obtain an upgrade or access to airport lounges by becoming a member of a frequent flyer program. But, the opaqueness around these points and miles may cause you to fall from the top of the list to the bottom.
The largest frequent flyer programs are currently being investigated by the Department of Transportation in an effort to stop “possible unfair, misleading, or anticompetitive conduct.”
